How to do it
Open RMM, then Files, and click Upload.
Upload is at the top right of the Files card. You can also drop a file anywhere on the card. A short notice reminds you that anyone with the address can download the file. One file can be up to 1 GiB. The library holds up to 50 GiB. The top of the card shows how much is used and the largest file you can add. A name can be up to 120 characters and cannot have a slash. If the name is already in the library, the upload is refused. Replace that file instead.
Wait for the row to show Ready.
A large file goes up in small parts, so it can take a while. The states are Uploading, Checking, Ready, Waiting for approval and Failed. Checking means the portal is reading the stored copy to work out its SHA-256 fingerprint. Failed means the upload did not finish. Upload the file again. An upload left unfinished for 24 hours is cleaned up.
Click Copy address, or Download.
Both show only when the file is Ready. The address is the link devices use. It stays the same if you rename or replace the file. The long random code in it cannot be guessed. Share it only with people and devices that should have the file. The SHA-256 column shows the first 12 characters. Its copy button copies the full fingerprint, so a script can check the file.
To change a file, open its Actions menu.
Replace uploads a new copy that takes over the same name and address. The old copy is kept for 24 hours for runs on their way, then it is removed. Rename changes the name and the description. It never changes the address. Make current shows only for a file that is Waiting for approval. Each item shows only if you have the right for it.
To remove a file, use Delete in its menu.
A file that a script still runs cannot be deleted. The message lists those scripts. Archive them or point them at another file, then delete again. Deleting removes the file and every older copy at once. Its address stops working. Hand-written scripts that only mention the address are a warning, not a block. Their download fails once the file is gone.
What you will have
- Upload a file, such as an installer.
- Copy the address that devices and scripts use to download it.
- Replace a file and keep its address.
- Rename or delete a file, and know what stops a delete.
Why it works this way: How to upload a file and share its address
The library holds files your techs upload once and use anywhere. Each file gets a public address.
Anyone with the address can download the file. There is no password and no sign in. Never put keys or passwords in a library file.
If it did not work: How to upload a file and share its address
- Replace needs more when scripts run the file. You must be able to edit scripts, and you must prove it is you.
- A script made with Insert file stops with exit code 92 after a replace. Open the script, remove the old block and use Insert file again.
- Waiting for approval means a script began using the file as your new one went up. Someone who can edit scripts clicks Make current.
- A download fails on a device. A firewall may block this portal or the storage address. The storage address is the start of the copied link, up to the first slash after https://.
- The page says the file library is for paid plans: trial instances have none. It turns on when the instance moves to a paid plan with its own file storage.
- The page says the library is not set up. The company that runs this portal for you can turn it on.
